LARGEMOUTH YELLOWFISH

The fish of a thousand casts!

Introduction

Undoubtedly South Africa’s apex freshwater predator, the Largemouth Yellowfish, has in recent times established itself as the most iconic fly fishing freshwater target species in the country. Attaining a weight of over 22 kg’s it is by far South Africa’s largest indigenous scaled freshwater fish even dwarfing SA’s local tigerfish stock.

Catching this specie on fly has often been described as one of the most mind-numbing and tiresome activities known to local fly anglers. Successfully targeting and catching Largemouth Yellowish on a regular basis takes dedication, perseverance, skill and most of all years of experience.

I have been targeting these gentle giants of the Vaal for over 10 years and have learnt through experience the “where, what and how” of landing these fish with regular success. My clients benefit from years of experience being passed on in a single day that would have otherwise taken any fly-fisherman a million casts into the unknown.

I’ve developed, tested, re-developed and fine-tuned all my custom tied flies to a point where I can now proudly say that I have 100% faith in every single fly I tie to the end of my client’s tippet.

Landing a Largemouth Yellowish is one of the most special moments any fly-fisherman / women will ever experience. I take pride in sharing these memories with my clients as they pursue their passion and ticking of a bucket list entry.

SMALLMOUTH YELLOWFISH

SA’s freshwater Bonefish!

Introduction

The Smallmouth Yellowfish has arguably become South Africa’s most targeted specie on fly and for good reason. Attaining a size of up to 8kg and found across South Africa using the correct technique and skills you too can learn the art of landing more fish more often.

The advent of nymph style fishing in South Africa has made fly-fishing more popular than ever in that with limited experience fly-fishers are able to land fish previously thought “uncatchable” on fly.

The real skill however is catching more fish more regularly. Having targeted this specie for almost 16 years, Gerrit Viljoen now shares his passion and prodigious experience with new and intermediate anglers on his home waters in Parys.

Learning the right techniques, set-up, fly selection and most of all, target areas, right from the start will enable you to confidently target this specie.
